audioBlast
Search recordings alongside their annotations, analyses and traits, from species to soundscapes.
Search and browse the world’s animal sound recordings, look up the terms used to describe them, and build on open data, vocabularies and software.
Recordings and data
audioBlast aims to make the world’s collections of bioacoustic and ecoacoustic recordings findable, accessible and searchable, with the taxa, traits, references, specimens and locations that describe them.
Search recordings alongside their annotations, analyses and traits, from species to soundscapes.
A page for each taxon with recordings in audioBlast, arranged by the Catalogue of Life classification, with its recordings, how its sound has been written down, and links to the analysis viewer.
Query recordings, annotations, taxa and traits, and analysis results such as acoustic indices and BirdNET identifications, as JSON, or let an AI assistant query them through the MCP server.
Controlled vocabularies for describing animal sounds and how they are recorded, from call types and sound production methods to recording devices.
Resources
Definitions of terms used in bioacoustics and ecoacoustics, with references, synonyms and related terms.
An R package, bioacousticsquotes, that generates random quotations from a database of quotes on bioacoustics and ecoacoustics.
Software
Packages for working with bioacoustic and ecoacoustic recordings in R.
An R interface to the Vamp audio analysis plugins, for running plugins such as acoustic indices and onset detection on recordings and getting the results as data frames.
A toolset in R for the analysis and visualisation of bioacoustic and ecoacoustic datasets.
Tools
Open-source plugins for wavesurfer.js, and a WebAssembly host for Vamp plugins, that bring bioacoustic recordings, annotations, spectrograms and analysis to the browser. They power the players on audioBlast and BioAcoustica.
A wavesurfer.js plugin that shows a recording’s annotations: boxes bounded in time and frequency on the spectrogram, linked to regions on the waveform.
A wavesurfer.js plugin that shows a precomputed spectrogram from image tiles, loading only those in view, so long and ultrasonic recordings appear at once.
A WebAssembly host for Vamp audio analysis plugins, to run them in a web browser or Node.js and analyse a recording without a server.
Open data
The glossary is published under a CC BY 4.0 licence, and software can read it as well as people. The audioBlast API and Vocabulary Server offer the same kinds of access.
Query audioBlast’s recordings, taxa and traits, or search the glossary and vocabularies for a term by name or acronym and fetch its definition and references by its URI.
Download the whole glossary as a SKOS concept scheme, or request any term as RDF from its own URI.
Let AI assistants such as Claude search recordings, taxa and traits, and read the definitions of terms and their references, through the Model Context Protocol. Each server is read-only.
